Dr. Martin Eigenschink

Specialist in Orthopaedics and Traumatology

Welcome to my private practice for orthopaedics and traumatology — consultations are also held in English.

As a specialist in elbow, shoulder and hand surgery, I operate on simple and complex injuries and conditions alike; my specialist field is the elbow. I treat both surgically and conservatively — the findings decide which treatment fits.

Elbow surgery

Specialist field: the elbow

At the elbow I treat the whole spectrum — from ligament reconstruction (restoring torn ligaments) through arthrolysis (releasing scar tissue) to tendon refixation (reattaching torn tendons to the bone). I am part of the specialist team for hand and elbow surgery in Vienna-Meidling.

How I work

Why Dr. Eigenschink?

Surgical and conservative

I operate myself and treat conservatively — which route makes sense follows from the findings. For conservative treatment, shockwave therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), ultrasound-guided injection and magnetic field therapy are available in the practice.

Care throughout the entire course

Where needed, I accompany my patients from planning the operation through the procedure to the end of rehabilitation. Every procedure is planned individually and discussed in detail.

Minimally invasive where possible

Where the findings allow it, I operate arthroscopically (keyhole surgery) through a few small incisions — at the elbow, shoulder and wrist. I use open surgery when the reconstruction requires it.

Sport from personal experience

From many years of my own activity in contact sport (American football), strength training and ball sports, I know the strains of these sports first-hand.

About Dr. Eigenschink

My aim is to achieve successful treatment together with my patients — surgical or conservative, depending on the findings. As a specialist in elbow, shoulder and hand surgery I treat acute injuries as well as chronic complaints of these joints.

Where possible, I operate minimally invasively, for example arthroscopically (keyhole surgery). I also specialise in the reconstruction of tendon injuries such as a tear of the pectoralis, biceps or triceps tendon. In my work in trauma surgery I also treat fractures.

Clinical career

2017 – 2022 specialist training in orthopaedics and traumatology at the AUVA Trauma Centre Vienna-Meidling (Prof. Fialka) and the Herz-Jesu-Krankenhaus Vienna (Prim. Anderl / Prim. Loho). Since 2023 my own private practice at the Orthozentrum Döbling.

Specialised training · Elbow, hand and shoulder surgery

With OA Dr. Martin Chochole (hand and elbow) and Priv.-Doz. Dr. Philipp R. Heuberer (shoulder).

Treatment according to the findings

Conservative & regenerative treatments

“Conservative where the findings allow it — surgical where they require it.”

Shockwave therapy

Focused and radial, among other things for tennis elbow (irritated tendon insertion at the elbow) and calcific tendinitis (calcium deposit in a shoulder tendon).

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

A concentrate from your own blood for tendon and joint complaints, with the aim of supporting the body's own healing.

Physiotherapy and exercise therapy

A service of the Orthozentrum Döbling, in the same building as my practice.

Chiropractic

A chiropractor also works at the Orthozentrum Döbling — a service of the centre.

For patients

Private practice

What does private practice mean?

My practice is a private practice, in Austria a Wahlarztordination. I do not settle directly with any public health insurer; you receive an invoice and submit it to your insurer — on request I take care of the submission for you.

With supplementary insurance

This means private supplementary insurance for a hospital stay, also known as Sonderklasse. For operations, direct settlement with your insurance is possible.

As a self-payer

Supplementary insurance is not a requirement. Even without it, you can be examined, treated and, if necessary, operated on by me.

How it works

Your route to treatment

After the diagnosis, the route follows the findings: surgical or conservative. From the first enquiry to aftercare I look after you myself.

  1. 1

    First contact

By telephone Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 16:00, or by e-mail. As a rule you get an appointment within a week; for acute cases there are times outside the consulting hours.

  2. 2

    Diagnosis

A detailed conversation, clinical examination and ultrasound in the practice; I arrange an X-ray or MRI if needed. Bring everything that is available — a referral is not necessary.

  3. 3a

    Individual, specialised surgery

If the findings point to a procedure, I plan it individually and carry it out myself — specialised in the elbow, shoulder and hand, preferably minimally invasive. I operate at the ATOMOS Klinik Währing, the Privatklinik Döbling or the Rudolfinerhaus.

  4. 3b

    Conservative treatment

If, on the other hand, the findings point to treatment without an operation, I use shockwave therapy, injection, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or magnetic field therapy in the practice; physiotherapy is available in the same building at the Orthozentrum Döbling.

  5. 4

    Aftercare

Whether after an operation or during conservative therapy: I monitor the progress and accompany you until the treatment is completed.

Frequently asked

FAQ

At the elbow I treat irritated tendon insertions such as tennis and golfer's elbow, instability after a ligament injury or dislocation, tears of the distal biceps and triceps tendons, the stiff elbow and elbow osteoarthritis, cubital tunnel syndrome (compression of the ulnar nerve) and fractures such as the radial head fracture. Whether treatment is conservative, arthroscopic or open is decided by the findings.

The practice is a private practice (Wahlarztpraxis) and does not settle directly with any public health insurer. You receive an invoice, which you submit to your health insurer. On request I take care of the submission for you.

If you have private supplementary insurance for a hospital stay, also known as Sonderklasse, direct settlement with it is possible for operations. For a visit to the practice, billing remains via the invoice.

As a rule within a week. For acute cases, additional times outside the regular consulting hours are set aside.

Everything that is available:

  • e-card
  • previous findings and doctors' letters
  • X-ray, CT or MRI images

A referral is not necessary.

Ultrasound, shockwave therapy (focused and radial), magnetic field therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and ultrasound-guided injection are available in the practice. The Orthozentrum Döbling also houses physiotherapy, exercise therapy and a chiropractor.

I carry out necessary procedures at the ATOMOS Klinik Währing, the Privatklinik Döbling or the Rudolfinerhaus, and I accompany you from planning through the procedure to aftercare.

The practice is at Heiligenstädter Straße 113 in Vienna's 19th district — a five-minute walk from the U4 station Heiligenstadt and from tram line D.

By car, short-term parking and a paid garage opposite are available. The practice is on the ground floor with step-free access.

Whether an operation makes sense is decided by the findings. With some injuries the operation comes first — for example with many tendon tears, after a dislocation with persisting instability or with a displaced fracture.

With irritation or wear, on the other hand, conservative treatment may be appropriate at first. We make the decision together once all findings are available.

Sports medicine

Through my many years of activity in contact sport, strength training and ball sports, caring for athletes is a particular concern of mine.

With physically active patients who have a tendon tear — for example of the biceps, triceps or pectoralis — or a dislocation, I discuss early on whether the tendon should be reconstructed surgically or the joint stabilised. I also treat other sports injuries and fractures.
