Dr. med. Martin Eigenschink
Specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology, since 2023 with my own private practice — a Wahlarztordination — at the Orthozentrum Döbling in 1190 Vienna. As a specialist in elbow, shoulder and hand surgery I accompany you from the initial assessment to treatment, surgical or conservative, depending on the findings. On this page you will find my background, my qualifications and the way I work.
The way I work
How I work
It matters to me that you understand what is going on in your shoulder, your elbow or your hand — and why I advise a particular course.
First I ask you to describe how long the complaints have been present and in which situations they occur, and then I examine you clinically. I assess tendons, ligaments and bursae with the ultrasound in the practice, in movement as well; I arrange an X-ray or an MRI externally when the findings call for it. I discuss every finding in plain language and show you what it is about.
Whether a procedure is necessary only becomes clear after the assessment. In cases of irritation, stiffness or wear I usually begin without an operation. With a fresh tendon tear, a dislocation with instability or a displaced fracture, by contrast, I operate early, because timing matters here. Which path suits the individual case depends on the findings — and on what you would like to do again in everyday life and in sport. If I operate, I accompany my patients from planning through the procedure to aftercare.
Specialist areas
My specialist areas
Injuries and chronic complaints of the upper limb: hand, elbow and shoulder, together with arthroscopy, tendon reconstruction and fracture treatment.
In hand surgery I treat nerve compression syndromes such as carpal tunnel syndrome (compression of the median nerve), wear of the thumb saddle joint (thumb base osteoarthritis), trigger finger as well as fractures and ligament injuries of the wrist.
Elbow surgery is the field in which I have particularly deepened my training: tennis and golfer's elbow (lateral and medial epicondylitis), instability after a dislocation, the stiff elbow and arthrolysis (release of scarring inside the joint).
At the shoulder the range extends from repair of the rotator cuff through calcific tendinitis to stabilisation after a dislocation and at the AC joint (acromioclavicular joint).
Many of these procedures can be performed minimally invasively. In arthroscopy I work through small incisions with a camera and fine instruments; at the elbow I also use elbow arthroscopy for diagnosis when the cause of an instability would otherwise remain unclear.
I also specialise in the reconstruction of tendon injuries — a tear of the pectoralis, biceps or triceps tendon. My work in trauma surgery adds fracture treatment, that is the management of broken bones of the elbow, shoulder and hand.

Recognitions
Qualifications
The title of specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology was conferred on me in Austria. Added to that are the recognitions of the AGA — the society for arthroscopy and joint surgery.
The AGA — the society for arthroscopy and joint surgery — is the professional society for joint surgery in the German-speaking countries. As an AGA Faculty Member I am involved there in the training of colleagues; since 2025 this has been joined by the recognition as an AGA Education Center. I am also certified as an AGA Certified Surgeon.
Seals of the AGA — the society for arthroscopy and joint surgery: Faculty Member, Education Center and Certified Surgeon.
Professional exchange
Research and teaching
Orthopaedics and traumatology are constantly evolving. So that my patients benefit from this, I give lectures at national and international congresses and discuss methods, indications and results there with colleagues.
In addition, I publish scientific articles and book chapters. As an AGA Faculty Member I pass on my experience in arthroscopy and joint surgery to other doctors — teaching makes you justify your own approach again and again.
The exchange within the specialist team for hand and elbow surgery in Vienna-Meidling is particularly valuable with rare or complex findings. When a case is not clear-cut, I say so openly and seek a second professional opinion instead of forcing a decision.
Sport
Sport from my own experience
My long-standing involvement in contact sport (American football), strength sports and ball sports makes looking after athletes a matter of particular importance to me.
I know the movements in which it happens: the pectoralis tendon tearing during the bench press, the fall onto the outstretched hand, the shoulder that gives way during a throw, the elbow that no longer holds securely after a dislocation. And I know what it means to lose a season.
That is why I ask early about your sport, your training volume and your goals, and plan the treatment along those lines — without dramatising the injury and without playing it down.
Appointment
Let us talk about your findings
My practice is a private practice, in Austria a Wahlarztordination. I do not settle directly with any public health insurer; you receive an invoice and submit it to your insurer — on request I take care of the submission for you. I have summarised what this means for the process under private practice and the invoice.
For your first appointment please bring everything you have: e-card, previous findings, doctors' letters as well as X-ray, CT or MRI images. A referral is not necessary. Which path is right for you, conservative or surgical, we decide together as soon as all the findings are in.
