Private practice in Vienna — process, supplementary insurance, self-payers
My practice at the Orthozentrum Döbling is a private practice, in Austria a Wahlarztordination. Here you can read how the invoice reaches your health insurer, how billing works for an operation with supplementary insurance, and what applies if you have no supplementary insurance.
In short
As a doctor in private practice (Wahlarzt) I do not settle directly with any public health insurer. For examination and treatment in the practice you receive an invoice, which you submit to your health insurer; whether it reimburses anything, and how much, is decided by the insurer. If you have private supplementary insurance, direct settlement with it is possible for operations. Supplementary insurance is not a requirement for treatment.
What a private practice means
My practice is a private practice, in Austria a Wahlarztordination. I do not settle directly with any public health insurer; you receive an invoice and submit it to your insurer — on request I take care of the submission for you.
In the practice, ultrasound, shockwave therapy, magnetic field therapy, PRP therapy and ultrasound-guided injection are available to me. Which treatment comes into question, whether for a tear of the rotator cuff, a tennis or golfer's elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome, is decided by the findings.
Reimbursement by your health insurer
The invoice lists the services provided. Whether your health insurer reimburses anything, and how much, is decided by the insurer itself, not by my practice. Only your insurer can give binding information. You can submit the invoice by the route your insurer provides for this.
For your operation
Supplementary insurance (Sonderklasse)
This means private supplementary insurance for a hospital stay, also known as Sonderklasse. This is how an operation with supplementary insurance proceeds:
-
1
Findings and decision
At the practice I go through the findings with you and whether an operation is the sensible step.
-
2
Operation
I operate at the ATOMOS Klinik Währing, the Privatklinik Döbling or the Rudolfinerhaus, preferably minimally invasively, and accompany you from planning through the procedure to aftercare.
-
3
Direct settlement
For operations, direct settlement with your supplementary insurance is possible. What it covers and whether an excess remains for you is determined by your contract.
Supplementary insurance for a visit to the practice
For the consultation, examination and treatments in the practice, such as ultrasound-guided injection, shockwave therapy or PRP therapy, there is no direct settlement with supplementary insurance; these are billed by invoice.
Self-payers: treatment without supplementary insurance
Even without supplementary insurance, examination, conservative therapy and, if necessary, an operation are open to you. For questions about the costs of an operation you can reach the practice by telephone via the Orthozentrum Döbling or by e-mail.
What to bring to your appointment
Please bring everything you have relating to your complaints; you do not need a referral. The more complete the documents, the more reliably the findings can be assessed.
- e-card
- Previous findings and doctors' letters — older ones too, they show the course
- X-ray, CT and MRI images — where possible the images themselves, not only the written report
If any of this is missing, the appointment is still worthwhile; I arrange any imaging that is needed.
Frequently asked
Frequently asked questions about the invoice, supplementary insurance and reimbursement
That depends on the extent of the treatment, which follows from the findings: a consultation with a clinical examination is something other than an examination with ultrasound followed by an injection. For questions about costs you can reach the practice by telephone via the Orthozentrum Döbling (Mon – Fri 9:00 – 16:00) or by e-mail.
You receive an invoice and send it to your health insurer by the route it provides for this. The insurer checks the invoice and decides whether it reimburses anything, and how much. If you would rather not deal with that yourself, I submit it for you.
Whether your health insurer reimburses anything, and how much, is decided by the insurer, not by my practice. It depends on which insurer you are with and which services appear on the invoice. That is why I deliberately do not quote percentages. Only your insurer can give binding information.

No. Direct settlement with supplementary insurance is possible for operations. For the consultation, examination and treatments in the practice you receive an invoice and submit it to your statutory health insurer; on request I take care of that for you. Whether the insurer reimburses anything, and how much, it decides itself.
Yes. Supplementary insurance is not a requirement. Examination, conservative therapy and, if necessary, an operation are also open to you as a self-payer. For a visit to the practice you receive an invoice, which you submit to your health insurer. For questions about the costs of an operation you can reach the practice by telephone via the Orthozentrum Döbling or by e-mail.
No. You do not need a referral for an appointment at my practice; you arrange it directly. For your first appointment please bring everything you have: e-card, previous findings, doctors' letters as well as X-ray, CT or MRI images. If further imaging is needed, I arrange it; ultrasound is available to me in the practice.
As a rule within a week. For acute cases I also offer times outside the practice hours. The practice works by arrangement; you can reach it by telephone from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 16:00, and in writing by e-mail to ordination@ortho-eigenschink.at.
Whether to treat conservatively or to operate is something I decide together with you, after the examination and based on the findings.
